Pilates is a Method growing!
Last week, we highlighted May as Mental Health Awareness Month. This week, we’re focusing on why pilates is growing in popularity everywhere ♥️ ! With a growth rate of nearly 40% in just six years, Pilates has seen participation climb from 9.2 million in 2019 to almost 13 million in 2025. From athletes to entrepreneurs to wellness communities, Pilates is no longer just a niche workout. More people are choosing it because it builds strength that supports the body for the long-term.
At Lowcountry Power Pilates Studio, many of our clients are 50+, and I’ve always admired their dedication – especially those in their 70’s and 80’s. They’ve discovered that Pilates truly is for everyone and can be a powerful tool for staying mobile, strong, and feeling their best!
Why fitness matters more as we age: Aging naturally brings loss of muscle, balance, mobility and bone density. Without intentional movement, that loss accelerates, and everyday tasks start to feel heavy, risky or exhausting. Staying fit isn’t about staying young- it’s about aging gracefully and staying independent.
Key Factors to Pilates’ Popularity:
Fitness is Shifting from intensity to intelligence:
1 Less exhaustion focused workouts and more mindful awareness movements.
2 Intelligent movement training includes precision over repetition.
3 Better long term joint health.
Strength from the inside:
1 Deep core muscles activated.
2 Spine receives better support.
3 Posture becomes stronger, which assists in better breathing.
Movement that supports better quality life:
1 Better balance and mobility.
2 Efficient daily mindful movement.
3 Reduced strain on joints.
Why people stay with Pilates:
1 Mindset shifts having positive results on mental health.
2 Movement helps reduce stiffness and aching joints.
3 Strength becomes sustainable, impacting our longevity.
Founding Principles:
But here is a behind the scenes framework that instructors use to tailor their workouts for their students; Referred to as the 4 “S’s” Strength, Stamina, Stability and Stretch.
Strength: Building muscular power could be core, upper body, lower body or even balancing one side versus the other side of the body.
Stamina: The ability to sustain that strength over time, like doing exercises continuously without breaks.
Stability: Keeping a strong, controlled center (especially the pelvis) while limbs move.
Stretch: Improving flexibility and length often with a oppositional (2 way) stretch.
As clients you’ve never just working one “S.” All four are always present, but usually 1-2 are the instructors main focus depending on our students and their goals.
Healthy Summer Recipe:
Greek Yogurt Ranch Dressing
1 cup plain yogurt (I like Fage)
1 Tbsp olive oil
1 Tbsp lemon juice
1 tsp garlic power
1 tsp onion power
1 tsp dill
1/2 tsp parsley
Salt & pepper to taste. Mix and chill. It’s a healthier version that I like to prepare when entertaining or just to have on hand to snack on.
As always we love hearing our clients feedback! So if you have any requests or ideas please share them. We love our community and getting to share our passion for pilates.
